Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such drugs should be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural management.
