The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and featured numerous filler arcs. Starting in the new year, once the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will go on a quarterly break until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every year for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a half-year break that began in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the animation quality and allow the manga to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to supply viewers with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series covering one chapter, with some alternatively handling more material or more to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
