Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge specific decisions from the official, echoing the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
